Is it very peculiar to ponder the importance of jewellery? For

centuries it was worn as a symbol of status and wealth yet now days

has been downgraded to nothing more than an accessory. From glitzy

cocktail rings to the Tiffany or Cartier real thing, jewellery is

being produced Gucci Borse on mass faster than you can say 'Bling'. So surely you

would think jewellery sales are booming? In fact Bulgari reported a

first quarter lost for the first time in a decade this year whilst

Tiffany profits plunged 62%. So in these frugal times is it fair to

say that jewellery is merely an accessory that is not necessary?

Personally I have always been drawn to jewellery from simple pearl

earrings, unusual pendants and chunky bangles. Picking up one of a

kind rings and trinkets from my travels that never fail to start a

conversation; silver plated necklaces from Thailand, Opal earrings

from Australia. At the same time there's something irresistibly

alluring about brushing back your hair to reveal a pair of Kenneth Jay

lane crystal drop earrings, or picking up a glass with an intricate

Alex Monroe ring wrapped around your finger.  Although you may not

consciously choose your jewellery with your outfit, those gap year

bracelets around your wrists and silver ring that is practically part

of your finger create an impression just as much as the clothes you

have chosen to wear.

To an extent jewellery chooses you and refuses to let you abandon it,

from your grandmother's ring to that infectious charm bracelet that's

becomes an overwhelmingly sentimental item. Loosing your favourite tee

shirt is nothing compared to losing your favourite ring. So how do you

distinguish the sentimental wearer from the obstinate? Did that woman

set out to accessorize that black dress with a string of pearls? Or

did she just throw them on like she does with every other outfit?

Being able to answer that question is remarkably revelatory of a

person's character.

Take my friend Alice she's a very LK Bennet shoes, Ralph Lauren

jumpers sort of girl and I suppose it wouldn't be shocking to tell you

that she doesn't wear bold statement necklaces or hoop earrings but

her small barley noticeable diamond studs are an instant indicator of

her personality. She is not extravagant but elegant, she cares about

her image but she is not vain, she is not loud and proud but has an

inner confidence that shines demurely like the carats in her studs.

However put her diamond earrings on a man and it's a completely

different story. Although it would be wise to follow the words of

William Morris in that 'not on one strand are all life's jewels

strung' it is just as important to consider your jewellery when you

consider your outfit after all where would Goths be without metal

studs, Sloane's without Links Charm Bracelets and Trend Hunters

without bangles.
