Press-Fit Bushings

Press-fit bushings (A), are available in either head type, or headless styles. The press-fit style bushing is intended to be used for limited production applications where the bushings will not be changed repeatedly during the useful life of the jig. Since these bushings are pressed directly into the jig plate, repeated installations could cause the mounting hole to wear and reduce both the accuracy and soundness of the installation.

The headless type press-fit bushing is the most popular and least expensive. These bushings are intended for single operations, such as drilling or reaming. The headless design allows these bushings to be placed close together and flush with the top of the jig plate. For those applications where the axial load might push the bushing through the mounting hole, the head type press fit bushing should be used. These bushings are similar to the headless style, but must be counterbored if flush mounting is a requirement. First, use your drilling tool in order to make a hole big enough for the jig plate to fit into. The jig plate will serve as the platform that will support the drill bushings. Make sure that the hole you're going to make should only be slightly wider than the drill bushings' diameter. This way, you'll spare yourself from the hassle of having to push the bushing into place.

Then after drilling the holes needed, position your drill bushings on top of the holes and insert it forward, as far into the hole as you can. Try pushing with your hands first. After pushing it far enough, use a hammer or a rubber mallet to push it further forward into place. Check if the bushings fit snugly into the jig plate to use them properly.

When everything is in place, then you can then proceed with whatever drilling job or building project you have in mind. Remember that whenever a drilling job needs to be done, always position the plate to the specific area where a hole needs to be made.

Warped or cracked drill bushings allow the bit to wobble which may cause it to travel offline. Older well-used bushings require an occasional inspection to make sure they are not showing damage. Uneven gaps between the drill bit and the bushing are indicators of a worn passageway through the drill bushing. It is difficult to fully repair and return a drill bushing to the original manufactured standard. For this reason, most broken drill bushings are discarded and replaced with new identical pieces.
