You have two choices when it comes to finding your way around and only the one option actually makes sense. Topographic maps come in paper form where you have a massive sheet of paper covered with lines and green and brown colours, with writing all over the place, and odd looking symbols everywhere. First of all you have to look at what direction the map needs to face, then you need to figure out where you are on the map so you can work out which way you need to go. If you need to work out if you are going to make it to camp on time then you also have to do a bit of measuring and whole bunch of calculations to figure what the distance is and then you work out how long it will take you based on your average speed. All of that sounds really long winded and can be a real pain if you have to make sure you are at a specific place at a specific time without getting lost along the way. It can all be avoided if you decide to opt for a fully digitised version of exactly the same map. Your current location is determined in real time via cellular and GPS networks to help triangulate your position down to the last metre. When you load current maps onto your device, it will help you plot out routes and indicate where you are going to set up camp for the night. Certain devices have apps that allow you to plot refuelling points if you are travelling in your 4x4. You can venture out into the middle of nowhere and still be directed back to the nearest gas station in time to fill up again.
It comes in handy when you have all the information you need at the press of a button and you don’t have to worry about wasting time figuring it all out.
