Safety of both passengers and road users should never be compromised, and no amount of dollar value should be attached to matters of life and death on the roads. That having being said, the costs involved in the implementation of TPMS as well as the after sales service and maintenance costs should also be factored in when evaluating the use of such systems. It is not just the monetary consideration of implementing tire monitoring systems, but the ease of vehicle maintenance as well. No longer is the replacement of tires a quick 30 minutes job because service technicians will now have to handle the reprogramming of the tire pressure sensors each time tires are being removed and replaced. Even the disconnecting of batteries will necessitate the reprogramming of tire pressure sensors. Needless to say, service technicians need retraining and be equipped with the necessary tools to do their job. In short, we are talking about the emergence of a whole new industry that caters to the requirements of the Tread Act, which specifies the technical requirements of TPMS systems.
Costs aside, the benefits of tire pressure monitoring systems go beyond road safety concerns. A well inflated tire reduces wear and tire, and prolongs the service life of the tire. Well inflated tires also reduce carbon emissions because less drag is placed on the car engines. That is a plus for the environment. Road accidents as a result of tire blowouts, skidding and miscalculated stopping distances are also reduced. We expect to see less road accidents and less fatalities as a result of the implementation of TPMS.
The size of the market created through mandatory implementation in North America alone is staggering, and with the European Union countries following suit, with that of Japan, South Korea and other countries mulling the legislation, it is almost certain that very soon, TPMS will become a standard vehicle feature. It is no wonder that tpms manufacturers are positioning themselves to get a share of the emerging market.
In conclusion, it will be interesting to monitor the statistics on car accidents to determine if indeed, and to what extend, the implementation of TPMS has helped to reduce traffic accidents. Yes indeed, in the same way we have been asked to monitor our tires.
