According to Japan's Ministry of Finance statistics on steel export and import, export quantity in January 2012 was 2,918,000 tonnes, down by 16.1% YoY and also down by 6.9% MoM from the previous month. It was the first time in 2 years and 7 months since June 2009 (2,874,000 tonnes) that export quantity dipped below 3 million tonnes.
Export amount in yen in January 2012 was JPY 259.46 million, down by 11.4% YoY. While, import quantity in January 2012 was 669,000 tonnes, up by 14.7% YoY and down by 10.2% MoM from the previous month. It was the first time in 4 months that import dipped below 700,000 tonnes.

By destination of export in January 2012, export to Asia was 2,274,000 tonnes, down by 20.3% YoY. Out of these, that to China was 425,000 tonnes, down by 30.2% YoY ditto exceeding the level of 400,000 tonnes for 2 months in a row, to the Asian NIEs 910,000 tonnes, down 25.7% YoY and to ASEAN 850,000 tonnes, also down 7.8% YoY.
By destination to remote countries areas, export to Middle East was 157,000 tonnes, up by 63.8% YoY, to Russia 21,000 tonnes, down by 48.6% YoY, to USA 169,000 tonnes, up by 18.9% YoY and to EU 22,000 tonnes, down 27.1% YoY.
While, by country area of import in January 2012, import from Asia was 556,000 tonnes, up by 23.9% YoY. Out of these, import from China was 104,000 tonnes, up by 34.1% YoY, from the Asian NIEs 422,000 tonnes, up by 25.5% YoY and from ASEAN staying at 8,500 tonnes, down by 59.1% YoY. That from Russia was 14,500 tonnes, down by 15.9% YoY, from EU 10,000 tonnes, down 5.3% YoY and from USA 2,000 tonnes, up by 60.8% YoY.
