THE U.S. AND U.K. may be divided by one common language, but New York and London are united by another: fashion. The cities, rivals on many levels, are kindred spirits when it comes to style.

Even the neighborhoods align. Look past the backdrop and it's easy to mistake a look captured by a street fashion photographer in Williamsburg for Shoreditch, or Notting Hill for the West Village.

And like the double-exposed, overlapping images photographer Daniella Zalcman created of the two cities in her "New York + London" Kickstarter love letter, fashion in these capitals creates a kind of trans-Atlantic synergy—one with a wide-ranging influence. The trends you see on these streets now will more often than not end up on a shop rack near you in a year's time.

To get a fashion-forward feel for what we'll be wearing this summer-into-fall, we talked to Philip Start and Brix Smith-Start, founders of Start London boutiques. The duo, an institution in East London, are schooled in trans-Atlanticism—they're getting ready to launch their own invasion of America this fall.

Knightsbridge // Upper East Side

Here we'll see looks that are more conservative, but very expensive. We'll still see an Hermès Birkin or a Céline Trapeze bag, matched with an exquisitely cut camel or navy trouser. It's perfect for the Upper East Side or Knightsbridge, as it represents effortless chic, without trying too hard.

The look used to be more Chanel, but with Céline, it's a bit more relaxed. Céline is the most influential design house of the moment and it is filtering down to every post code. But then again, you'll also see a lot of white jeans, honoring a sort of Hamptons look.

Slightly safer designers are more prominent here, such as Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Chanel and Louis Vuitton.

Notting Hill // West Village

The first designer that comes to mind for this neighborhood is Isabel Marant, who we did mention for Shoreditch, but here it is more a relaxed kind of feeling.

In these neighborhoods, we're more in the world of the yummy mummy and cashmere hippie.

The Notting Hill/West Village woman is the style icon. She breaks the mold. She wants to look effortless on the down-low, but spends a lot of money to achieve that look, wearing designers such as Marc Jacobs or Céline, dressed down with a Marant wedge sneaker.

Shoreditch // Williamsburg

People in our neighborhood want to dress up, yet dress down at the same time.

Acne, for example, is a great brand, as it fits in with the urban, stylistic boy or girl. Another good label is Maison Martin Margiela, which has great credibility with the fashion crowd.

For men, it's about texture; it doesn't matter too much what the fabric is. People are buying the style first and the fabric second. It can get casual here, but never as casual as America.

For women, it's about making your own creative statement, showing your personality through style. The Shoreditch look is making an effort to be creative. The same goes for Williamsburg—the two neighborhoods are really of the same ilk.

T-shirts by brands like Cécile and Martin Margiela, which is edgy but with a classic side, and great jeans or leggings like Helmut Lang, which work for a variety of ages and sizes, and Isabel Marant trainers are massive around here.

It's about having that relaxed edge. You're using yourself as your own art installation. There isn't one look per se; it's your creativity that dominates the look.

The City // Wall Street

There's an unspoken dress code here and there are no more casual Fridays going on. Many times we've had men come in and say that while they like our narrow lapels, their bosses won't, and they can't afford to stand out.

Wall Street may be a little more open on this front, but at the end of the day, the M&A attitude remains the same. It would be lovely, though, to see a sudden yet distinct flair of outside-the-box style.

We really don't like this look of guys in their business suits just losing their ties and having an open-neck shirt; it's not a good look. Cool guys wear ties, and this is a trend I would really like to see more often in this area. You can say a lot with a tie: texture, width, color.

What we'd love to see infiltrating the conservative vein is more for women: Saint Laurent or Burberry Prorsum. Now that a wider lapel has become fashionable, that may be more acceptable in the City, along with slightly more interesting and experimental fabrics.
