We would all love to take a long exotic holiday somewhere far away from all the stress and chaos of our daily lives. Unfortunately though, long exotic holidays usually come with a really big price tag, which isn’t very helpful. However there are a few destinations that cater to those who are looking for a getaway, that doesn’t leave you broke and penniless on your return. One such destination is The Kingdom of Thailand. Thailand sits slap bang in the middle of South East Asia and is bordered by Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Malaysia. It boasts kilometres and kilometres of beautiful sun soaked beaches and equally beautiful seaside resorts to go with it. So if you’re looking for a relaxing beach break where you can catch a tan and sip Mai Tai’s while lazing on a hammock then look, no further.
There’s nothing quite as relaxing as lying in the sun and forgetting your troubles for a while, but Thailand holidays also have so much more to offer than just your typical resort vacation. Almost 95% of the Thai population is Buddhist and as such there are literally thousands of exquisitely built temples. Some more famous or grander than others, but each with its own rich and interesting history and each filled with Thai’s who would love to tell you more about them. There are fascinating traditional ceremonies and activities that take place daily. Often temples have small markets with different ornaments other interesting souvenirs and titbits crafted by the monks who live on the premises. Of course one cannot go to Thailand without trying the absolutely mouth watering Thai cuisine. Rice production represents a large portion of the Thai economy and is the largest exporter of rice in the world. So naturally most of their dishes are served with rice. What’s amazing though is how many different types of rice are used and the varied and creative ways in which it is prepared. For example Sticky rice (or khao neow as it’s called in Thai) is a special type of rice that when cooked forms a large clump of rice stuck together. It’s great when you’re eating on the go or when you just don’t have a knife and fork handy. Sticky rice is very popular in the northern part of Thailand and is often sold by street vendors who sell it along with fried chicken or a freshly cooked kebab from their street side grills.
Clearly there are loads of new experiences and interesting things to see and do, without having to dig too deeply into your pocket. With an open mind and the right attitude your exotic vacation may not be that far away.
