Tennis elbow is a painful condition caused by overuse of arm, forearm, and hand muscles. It is also known as lateral epicondylitis, and it is not only caused because of playing Tennis. But several other sports and activities can also put one at this risk. The pain of tennis elbow occurs primarily where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony hump on the outside of your elbow. Pain may be extent to your forearm and wrist.

Tennis elbow symptoms can be similar to those of other elbow injuries so it is important to get a correct diagnosis early on.

Causes of Tennis Elbow

The condition found more in tennis players and the major causes are;

  • Overuse or repetitive strain caused by repeated extension of the wrist against opposition.
  • The backhand technique in tennis results the wrist to bent and when striking an extremely large forces are transferred through the tendons to the elbow rather than through the entire arm.
  • A racket grip is too small, so this will make the muscles work harder and increasing the forces through the tendon.
  • More shock and energy will be transmitted through the forearm from the ball if the strings are too tight.
  • Playing with wet, heavy balls.
  • Repetitive activities such as using a screwdriver, painting or typing.

Symptoms of Tennis Elbow

The symptoms of tennis elbow develop gradually with forearm activity, such as holding a racquet, turning a wrench, or shaking hands. In most cases, the pain begins as mild and slowly worsens over weeks and months.

Common signs and symptoms of tennis elbow include:

  • Pain about 1-2 cm down from bony area on the outer part of your elbow
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain slowly increasing around the outside of the elbow, not often, but pain may develop suddenly.
  • Pain is worse when squeezing objects or shaking hands.
  • Pain is worse by stabilizing or moving the wrist with force.

Treatments of Tennis Elbow

No single treatment has been shown to be totally effective for tennis elbow, anyway a combination of the treatments below are known to resolve tennis elbow over time. There are surgical and non-surgical treatments for tennis elbow. Each individual treatment may react differently to different treatments.

Non-surgical Treatment
Approximately 80-95% of patients have success with nonsurgical treatments.

Rest: The first step toward recovery is to give your arm rest. It means that you will have to stop participation in sports or heavy work activities for several weeks.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines: Drugs like aspirin reduces pain and swelling.
Physical therapy: Particular exercises are helpful for strengthening the muscles of the forearm. The therapist may also perform ultrasound, ice massage, or muscle-stimulating techniques to make better muscle healing.
Brace: Using a brace centered over the back of your forearm may helpful to relieve symptoms of tennis elbow. This can reduce symptoms by resting the muscles and tendons.
Steroid injections: Steroids are much effective anti-inflammatory medicines.

Surgical Treatment
If the non-surgical treatments do not respond after 6 to 12 months, you may recommend for surgery. Most surgical procedures for tennis elbow involve removing diseased muscle and reattaching healthy muscle back to the bone.

The surgical approach for the patient will depend on a range of factors. It include the scope of your injury, your general health, and your personal needs.

Open surgery: The most common approach to tennis elbow repair is open surgery. It needs to make an incision over the elbow. It is usually performed as an outpatient surgery.
Arthroscopic surgery: Tennis elbow can also be repaired using tiny instruments and small incisions.
