Teck Cominco’s Red Dog zinc operation, in the DeLong Mountains of Alaska’s Brooks Range, stands as the world’s largest zinc mine, having undergone a number of expansions since entering production in 1989. Last fall, Red Dog completed the commissioning of its latest expansion, the Value Improvement Program (VIP) Mill Optimization Project. The US$105 million set of improvements that together make up the VIP Mill Optimization Project will ensure the operation maintains its low costs while handling 1.2 million tons of concentrate. The improvements include:
Two new diesel generators in a new powerhouse building
The construction of a fuel tank at the port
The installation of a new concentrate thickener, 21 new cells for the flotation circuit, and new column cells.
Upgrading the water treatment plants
On-site expansion and upgrading of the lead flotation building and several parts of the plant
