"The formal living room is disappearing from the Australian scene, and is becoming replaced by the family room. In reality, the only things that have changed are the terms we apply to these rooms. Prior to the 1950s the term “family room” was not used. The family gathered in the living room for all functions not specifically reserved for other rooms, but with the 50s came television and the TV dinner – and the living room was doomed. Alas! If you have a family of five and only provide comfortable seating for three or four, where do you think the other person is going to be? Now, I know it is difficult to imagine five people who will want to be in one room looking at the same show, listening to the same music, or trying to read a book when the noise level is high. It can seldom be done, but if the first step – providing enough sitting for everyone – is not done, then it will never happen.

Keep this in mind when you think about seating more than tw o people: No matter how big your sofa, you will never get more than two people on it at one time unless you are having twenty people over for a committee meeting. It just will not happen. So do not think a sofa will take care of three or more. In fact, you may not even need a sofa. What about five chairs? Remember, there are no Furniture Police. No one will ever arrest you for doing something out of the ordinary. When it come to your home and your furniture, do what makes you happy and do what works for you! If you do you will never make a mistake.

After decisions about seating are made, figure out what other items you need for the room. Good lighting is you next concern, and that generally means tables for your lamps. Wherever you have a seat, you need light and a place to put drinks or snacks, bringing you right back to the comfort concern. Make this room “people-friendly”. If you  have space in the room for a party table with four good chairs around it, you can make the room even more functional. If a party table will not fit think about a smaller round table with small chairs. Bookcases are always a super additional to the family room and, if you have room for a great cocktail or coffee table, you will add even more look and function. The idea is to maximize the space so that all of you can pursue whatever activity relaxes you or whatever interest nourishes you.
