Although PVC is the most commonly known and used pipe for underground construction (UGC), its application should only be used by UGC professionals for particular circumstances. Standard PVC-PVC that is glued, cured, and then installed, is best utilized for trenching and left alone for directional boring purposes. However, when discussing installation of drain lines, PVC-and in particular Restrained Joint PVC-is the superior material for UGC professionals.
According to the Internet article “Restrained Joint PVC Allows Obstacles To Be Overcome In Sewer Extension Project” from Underground Construction Magazine.Com, “Using restrained joint PVC pipe in conjunction with directional drilling often provides an easier, faster installation, with fewer disturbances to the surrounding area.” Restrained joint PVC is easy to put together and, unlike using sticks of HDPE, does not require fusing or any of the costs associated with fusing of pipe. Since rolled HDPE should not be used for drainage purposes, this restrained joint PVC is the natural material to use due to the ease of placement and the ability to place without “bows” or bends associated with rolled HDPE. The pipe can be inserted into the bore being pulled (as is standard) or, in some cases, it can be pushed if ground and area conditions require.
Restrained joint PVC is put together in its typical 10 foot or 20 foot segments (also called sticks) by the following process. First the 2 segments of pipe are placed together and a coupler is placed over the matching ends. Then, a “spline” (defined as “A rectangular piece that fits grooves like key seats in a hub and a shaft, so that while the one may slide endwise on the other, both must revolve together” by Wiktionary) is inserted into the grooves on each end, connecting the 2 segments. A rubber seal also maintains the connection and segments are placed together only as they are needed. Restrained joint PVC segments can be easily taken apart and reconstructed as well.
Due to this locking mechanism and the durability of the pipe restrained joint PVC pipes are the superior material for UGC purposes. It has the properties to remain on pitch that rolled HDPE does not have. It does not require the fusion needed that stick HDPE does. It will not need to be glued and then cure like standard PVC-and there is not the risk of segments coming apart like standard PVC either.
