Precautions While Using A Deep Fryer

Deep fryer is commonly called as fat fryer or simply fryer. Crispy chips or French Fries are commonly prepared using deep fryers. Advancement has allowed additional features like basket which allows fried food to be raised and clear the oil when cooking is finished. Also timers with alarm prevent food from becoming over cooked. Additional features like ventilation system reduces the frying odors, oil filters extend the life and usability of oil.

However, deep fryers always carry the risk of fire or malfunctioning. Hence precaution must be taken while handling this kitchen appliance. The given below tips for frying and cooking other food in deep fryer will help you to use this kitchen appliance safely and in most efficient way.

1. Avoid Water in Oil
Water is denser compared to cooking oil. Hence, when water is added, it sinks and then vaporizes. This splatters oil and catches fire. If a fire is caused because of this splatter, do not use water to put off the fire.

2. Using Proper Oil
Some oils give out smoke at frying temperatures. These oils are not suitable for deep fry. Hence, proper oil should be selected while using a deep fryer. Refined sunflower oils, coconut oil, rice bran oil and refined safflower oil are best suited for this purpose.

3. Using Appropriate Quantity
Do not overfill deep fryer. When oil is headed, it expands a little. Also, there should be space for adding food. Care should be taken that oil does not spill from sides of the fryer. Also, while adding food, small quantities should be added. This helps in better and quick cooking.

4. Using fire blanket or fire extinguisher
Specialized fire extinguishers are available in the market. These are marked for fires that are caused while cooking. Always keep these fire extinguishers handy. You can also use fire blanket to smother fires.

Tips for Frying
  • Dry food should be used for frying. If you have washed the food then allow it to dry first. If you are using a frozen food, remove ice crystals.
  • If possible, use different fryers for different foods.  Heavy flavored food should be cooked after cooking light-flavored food.
  • Cook small pieces of food and in small quantity.
  • If your fryer comes with a filtering system, then filter the frying oil regularly.

Some commonly foods made in deep fryer are meats that include sea food, poultry food and fishes, potato chips and fires, fried dough few green vegetables etc.
