Nitrile O-Ring and Nitrile Seals

Resisting chemical attack is one of the important criteria in the design of sealing products like o-rings and sealing gaskets, and nitrile as a compound a suitable and recognised as the preferred material for resistance to petroleum based chemicals. Nitrile performs well within operating temperture that range from -35 to +120 degrees celsius. Because of its versatility, nitrile which is also known as NBR is widely used as the preferred material for sealing applications over a very extensive range of industries.

 

Designing a seal or o-ring that can withstand extreme temperatures can be a challenge because high temperature requirements are often in competition with low temperature when it comes to material formulation or compounding. Nitrile or NBR has exceptional performance capabilities and in many ways, it is superior to many other elastomers. The ability of nitrile o-ring to resist abrasion from dynamic applications as in hydraulic applications for instance, makes NBR seals the standard choice of compound for such applications. A low compression set is also a marked advantage for nitrile. However, nitrile may not be a recommended compound when the seal is to be used in areas where an extended exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet is to be expected. Exposure to ozone and weathering damages nitrile and s not suitable. For this reason, NBR compounds should be kept away from direct exposure to sunlight. Improvement in its formulation however, can readily product a nitrile version that can withstand exposure to sunlight. This process is achieved through compounding with the right formulation. In hydraulic cylinders and pneumatic cylinders for instance, the use of NBR or nitrile is almost a standard demand because of its ability to undertake abuse in the form of wear and abrasion. Hydrogenation is a process of blending that creates a versiopn of nitrile that has superior qualities, enabling it to resist specific chemical and physical properties which it woul not be able to otherwise.

 

Pneumatic seals perform a vital function in pneumatic cylinders by preventing the escape of air from the cylinder and at the same time, the intrusion of dust and particles. A major difference between the design criteria of pneumatic and hydraulic seals is pressure. Generally, pneumatic seals do not perform well under very high pressure. Typically pneumatic seals operate under pressure of 1 to 150 psi while hydraulic seals are capable of operating pressure in excess of 10,000 psi. High speed and low friction are the design requirements of pneumatic seals in rotary and reciprocating action.

 

 

Hydraulic and fluid seals are used in hydraulic equipment for the sealing and prevention of leakage of hydraulic fluid from cylinders. However, the function of hydraulic seals goes far beyond fluid containment because they operate under conditions of extreme pressure and temperature, and are subject to transverse forces. Rubber seals and gaskets are manufactured to the strict requirements of our customers and they are available in materials that include Viton, Buna and more. Aerospace o-rings, molded shapes and sheets that come into contact with jet fuel, synthetic engine lubricant, petroleum-based hydraulic fluids, hydrocarbon fuel, high aniline point petroleum based oil, aromatic fuel and diester based aerospace lubricants. Resistance to aircraft piston engine oil with low compression set and resistance to weather deterioration.
