IT relocation can be daunting if you do not have a great plan in place and a trusted experienced relocation partner to work with. There are certain things you can do to ensure that the relocation does not become the company's worst nightmare. To begin with you will need to ensure that all department heads are involved in the moving process. This will mean that they have an idea of how the move will take place and what their role is during each phase of the relocation. You will also need to let them know for how long they will be affected by the server relocation or data centre relocation as a whole.
As part of the IT relocation you will need to make sure that the new premises has also taken into account the networking needs of the company's IT users and that cabling has been installed with their needs in mind. You do not want to have wires running across floors where one can easily trip on them. At the same time you do not want to have cables left out in such a way that they create an eyesore for both customers and employees.
Whether you are physically relocating offices or simply migrating the company to a bigger server, it is possible that you will need to move department by department. That said you need to have a clear understanding of how this IT relocation will affect the various applications in use by each department. If for the server relocation will affect chore applications that are critical to the departments day to day work, then you will have to find relocation time that will not interfere with their work. This could be an overnight migration or a weekend migration.
Another thing you will need to make sure you understand in IT relocation is the infrastructure that is in place. If the new server has been upgraded, you may find that the software on the desktops is not compatible to the new server. Make sure to carry out the upgrade ahead of time. If you will need to physically carry out a desktop relocation be careful with that because you don’t want to break any of the hardware. Data centre relocation is not easy especially if the desktops are networked to the server so that they all work from it. You will need to be extra careful lest you paralyse the operations across departments.
To successfully carry out a desktop relocation or any IT relocation for that matter, it is important that you first figure out how each much each one is dependent on the server and then come up with an appropriate move for the migration. It is also important that you understand how any latencies will impact the business prior to the IT relocation. If you are not careful with this you may find that the company goes to undue losses in revenue generation because of mistakes that you have made that could have easily been avoided.
