Most homeowners can do simple home plumbing jobs themselves. The following are some typical household plumbing problems, and ways to fix them. Common issues include: water pressure being too low, drainage issues, and leaking faucets. Putting in some effort and doing small plumbing jobs yourself will save money in the long run.

As a homeowner, you already know you don’t need to call out a plumber for every little home plumbing job. The following are extremely common household plumbing issues which you can easily fix yourself. Deciding to do these simple jobs is going to take a little effort, but this will save you money on your household budget.

Problems with Water Pressure

Water pressure allows the water to enter the pipes in the home. You can inspect this with a pressure gauge. Very often, when the pressure seems to be low, there is an issue with the faucet. Over time, calcium deposits build up inside, restricting the flow of water. Inspect the flow of hot and cold water. If the pressure is low for both the hot and cold water, then the problem is inside the faucet. Clean the faucet aerator to remove the blockage.

Water Draining Away Too Slowly

When water takes too long to drain away from the bath or sink, you know there is likely to be an issue with the water trap. Usually this is due to debris collecting inside. It is easy to unscrew most traps and clean them out. You can do this every few months as a precautionary measure. Never wait for the sink or bath to become blocked.

Fixing a Leaking Compression Faucet

Sink and bath faucets are relatively simple to repair yourself. There is nothing more irritating than a dripping tap. An extremely common issue with faucets is that the washer inside becomes clogged with calcium. When this happens, the seal becomes broken and water seeps through. Water bills are high enough, so you can’t afford to let your money literally fall down the drain.

Faucets tend to vary in design. The following instructions are intended for typical compression faucets. Before you attempt to replace the washer, turn off the water supply. Next take the following measures:

Unscrew the faucet by removing the handle, plus any screws.
Use pliers or an adjustable spanner to remove the nut.
Unthread the stem.
If the washer is held in place by another screw, remove this also.

Sometimes, screws become too tight and are difficult to remove. When this happens, use some oil to loosen them first. Always treat faucet parts with care as they are easily damaged.
