The only official grand Victorian era hotel surviving the 19th century is the luxury 5 star Grand hotel. This hotel plays a significant role in Australian history as this is where the Australian Constitution was drafted in 1898. The Grand hotel has hosted many prestige national and international guests and has been dubbed the Duchess of Spring Street during the 20th century. Within the Parliament precinct the Grand hotel is a landmark in Melbourne depicting high Victorian architecture. It is noted that during 2013 major renovation will take place. The hotel was designed by Charles Webb and built by George Nipper which was completed in 1884, the hotel then was sold and was once again extended to almost double the size by James Munro and notable features of the Grand Hotel Melbourne was the grand staircase and ballroom which included twin mansard roofed towers replicating the stone sculpture and second empire over the entrance with female and male figures reclining over the Australian and English Coat of Arms named Plenty and Peace. The hotels liquor license was burnt in public by Munro who at that time was the leader of the temperance movement and a politician and the hotel then operated as and named the Grand Coffee Palace. In 1897 the hotel yet again saw a new owner which in turn was amalgamated with the Old White Hart hotel and the hotel was once again renamed the Grand Hotel. Today the Grand hotel is a historic icon with a distinguished and unique personality. The rooms are fully self contained with grand king sized beds and luxurious furnishings and modern kitchen facilities. The hotel includes an indoor spar and heated pool, sauna and full gym, and in house restaurant and bar. The grand hotel is close to all the major Melbourne attractions, Southbank, Etihad Stadium and Docklands.
