Students are required to cover the following competency levels before acquiring their diploma in beauty therapy that include performing full body massages, advice on beauty services, and the beauty therapy course also requires that students be able to apply the principles of skin biology in conjunction with beauty treatments, be able to recognize body systems and structures such as anatomy and physiology, work within the skin therapies framework, be able to interpret the physical actions and chemical composition of cosmetic products, apply electrical beauty therapy treatments. Provide manicure and pedicure services, provide advanced facial treatments, performing several waxing treatments, provide health and nutritional advice to clients, carry out financial transactions and work effectively in a retail beauty environment as well as have good communication skills. In additions students need to be able to apply safe working practices, plan spa programs and provide spa therapies such as stone therapy, Indian head massage, design photography makeup, be able to blend aromatic oils and apply them in beauty treatments. Physiology and anatomy will cover the body structure and systems which include nervous, tissues and cells, circulatory, lymphatic, muscular, urinary, endocrine and reproductive systems. Students are allowed to study at their own pace, and as they progress through their workbooks, are required to submit assessments. If students are opting to complete the entire course and obtain a certificate IV they are required to complete their modules in addition to completing their home studies in this field.
The duration of the course can take between six months to a year to complete and on completion student are required to sit the final board exam. Those opting for the more advanced facials course will be required to know how to use machines such as the Galvanic, vacuum suction, microdermabrasion and micro current. The facial and chemistry models have to be completed by students before they start the advanced beauty therapy courses.
