One of the state's largest purpose-built solar panel systems is part of a new multi-million dollar energy efficient mining manufacturing facility in the Hunter Valley.

Henan Hongxing Mining Machinery Co., Ltd is a joint-stock mining machinery manufacturing enterprise integrated in scientific research, production and marketing. It is located at the High & New Technology Industries Development Zone of Zhengzhou,China with an area of 50 thousand m2 which includes 15,000 m2 of standard heavy duty industrial workshop. Equipments are more than 160 pieces, including large and medium sized metal processing, riveting and installing equipments. There are more than 660 workers including 80 administrators with secondary and senior occupational titles and engineering technicians. In order to promote the competitive strength, the advanced technologies have been introduced from America, Germany, Japan and Australia, which established the international advanced production line, first-class modern testing base as well as research centers of sand maker, mill and mine-selecting equipment. Scientific management, advanced processing technology and innovative manufacturing theory make the company become the mining machinery manufacturing and exporting base in China.

Around 600 people will work out of Sandvik Mining's $50 million facility at Heatherbrae which has officially been opened today.

The company says all of its Hunter Valley operations have been consolidated onto the site including manufacturing, assembly, as well as the supply and support of coal mining equipment.

Federal Newcastle MP Sharon Grierson says it is a significant investment.

'A great vote of confidence in our region,' she said.

'It will have a turnover of about $40 million per annum.

'So this is big business for the Hunter and certainly a great vote of confidence in the future of mining in this region and the ability of this region to deliver.'

Ms Grierson says there are great benefits of investing in water and energy efficiency.

'It shows that they are a company that is innovative, that is not going to wait for any changes in our legislation and a price on carbon to the biggest polluters,' she said.

'They're doing it now.

'They're actually putting in energy efficiency to make sure they can sustain their operations over a longer time.'

Mark Dreyfus is the Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Innovation.

He says the solar panel system is large enough to power the entire office block and hot water for the site.

'This is a company that recognises the benefits of reducing carbon emissions and acting early to reap the benefits,' he said.

'It's state of the art in all respects - in energy efficiency senses, in the use of renewable energy.

'It's got a 132-kilowatt solar panel system, it's got a compressor system with a heat recovery module that will save 420 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, and state of the art water recycling system.
