With a few handy tips and tasty recipes from us, you’ll be able to bring restaurant-style dining to your kitchen table and impress your friends and family with these delicate little mouthfuls of Chinese elegance.

Literally meaning “to touch your heart” or “a little bit of heart”, dim sum was originally invented as just a light snack, served exclusively to accompany tea in ancient China. But the huge increase in demand means that there’s now an entire food industry dedicated to it.

Whether it’s steamed buns, fried dumplings or spring rolls, dim sum is no longer a mid-morning snack or small appetizer; it’s now an exciting, trendy dinner experience that’s taking London by storm.

However, to a dim sum newbie, the countless types will likely baffle and intimidate when one is confronted with a seemingly endless menu of confusing words – gao, jiaozi (or potsticker), bau, xiaolongbao, phoenix claw, siu mai, etc etc.

School of Wok understands how daunting and off-putting it can be to delve into a new type of cuisine, so we’re doing what we do best and simplifying dim sum, giving you a step-by-guide to make this food more approachable.

As well as offering short dim sum masterclasses, we are now running five-day intensive cookery courses in London focused solely on dim sum, teaching customers all there is to know about dozens of different bite-sized dishes.

Our ‘Dim Sum Extravaganza’ course begins in May and runs one evening a week for five weeks at our flagship cookery school in Covent Garden, making it flexible for those who lead busy lives in the city!
