Established in the year 1936 the park acts as a protected area for the endangered Bengal tiger of India, the secure survival of which the main target of protect tiger. Home to varied species of animals the park experience excellent topography as it has sub-Himalayan belt geographical and ecological characteristics. Over 488 different species of plants and 585 species of birds and animals have been recorded in the park. Some of the species of animals that can be found in park includes Jungle Cat, Fishing cat, leopard cat, barking deer, sambhar, hog, chital, Sloth and Himalayan Black bears, Indian grey Mongoose, otters, yellow-throated martens, Langurs and etc. apart from leopards are found in hilly areas but may also venture into the low land jungles.

The tigers in the park have been known to kill much larger animals such as buffalo and even elephant for food. The tiger attach to the larger animals in rare cases of food shortage.
