Is there a difference between women and men’s fragrances and perfumes? Perfumes and fragrances are used to attract members of the opposite sex and to gain attention, which has been a tactic used since ancient times and is now a huge element of the fashion industry. Fragrances and perfumes have always been characterized as mysterious, luxurious, romantic, sensual, powerful and glamorous. The word perfume means “through smoke” when translated from Latin. The Egyptians for instance used exotic flowers taken from the banks of the Nile such as myrrh, rose and frankincense, to make creams and oils as they believed that perfume would assist the deceased souls to enter the afterlife.

The very first liquid fragrance was designed by the Greeks which used a variety of carrier fragrances such as almond, coconut and olive oil mixed with water, and alcohol and these womens fragrances and perfumes included essential oils taken from anise and orris root and lilies. These liquid perfumes were used by both men and women. During the Medieval era, fragrances and perfumes were made from lavender that grew on the moors. Women bathed in lavender, lilac and rose water and in order to extract pleasing fragrances they would rub their body down with pressed herbs and flower petals. As legend has it, almost 100 bottles of cologne was used a month by Napoleon, and when he went into battle used his favorite fragrance. All the members of King Louis XIV court were ordered to use different fragrances every day. Eau de Cologne was invented by a young Italian in 1709 which included ethanol and water and citrus oils such as Neroli, bergamot, orange, tangerine, lemon and lime grapefruit and florals such as jasmine, lavender, and herbs such as thyme and rosemary. This particular Eau de Cologne gained popularity worldwide. Perfumes were considered to be a luxury throughout most of history and were restricted and worn by the richer communities. Only during the late 1800’s fragrances and perfumes were divided into separate men and women classifications. Men’s colognes then comprised of tobacco, musk, sandalwood and cloves and women’s fragrances comprised of violet, rose, jasmine, lavender and lily.

The very first famous women’s fragrance was designed in 1921 which comprised of ingredients such as ylang-ylang, vetiver, rose, sandalwood and jasmine of which today this designer brand that now includes other fragrances has become a multimillion dollar industry. The original fragrances used in perfumes have now been replaced with synthetic fragrances in addition to additives such as pheromones which have proved to trigger, emotions and sexual arousal. Many men’s fragrances also contain synthetic male sweat pheromones which attract women.
