How to Treat Your Credit Information
When talking about credit protection, the first thing people need to understand is how they should treat their credit information. Your credit profile is a historical account of all your credit transactions. It lets an evaluator know how responsible you are as a borrower. It also lets them know how trustworthy you are in terms of paying off your dues. Credit fraud easily damages your credit history, and this usually results to bad credit scores. Bad credit will then make it difficult for you to get loan and credit applications approved, since evaluators will think you’re a problematic borrower. These unpleasant possibilities make it crucial for you to understand credit protection. It will not only save your credit history, but will also save you from years’ worth of financial and legal impediments. Hence, treat your credit information like gold. It is a very important and confidential piece of information that results in problematic repercussions once it gets stolen.
The Basics to Credit Protection
Information campaigns have always reiterated how we should take care of our credit cards. A lot has been said about effective financial management; however, determining whether people really understand about these precautions are remains uncertain. Knowing the importance of precautionary measures against credit fraud comes with the acknowledgement that credit fraud and identity theft can happen to anyone. Hence, the following are 6 simple precautionary measures that allow you to practice effective credit protection on your own:
- Be careful of communications involving credit information – Never disclose your account number to anyone on the phone or in any online communication unless you’ve made the call to a company known to be reputable. If you’ve never done business with them before, conduct a background check first for reviews and complaints.
- Be wary of where you place your credit card(s) – Do not place your cards in the same wallet as your cash. Though this may sound inconvenient, this minimizes your losses if someone steals you wallet or purse.
- Eye on the card – Always keep an eye on your card whenever you make a transaction. Make sure you get it back before you walk away.
- Be careful where you sign – Never sign a blank receipt. Always draw a line through any blank spaces above the total.
- Keep documentation of your transactions – Save your receipts to compare with your account statement.
- Observe your credit card bills and account statements – Open your bills promptly or check them online as often as you can. This way, you can reconcile them with the purchases you’ve made recently and easily identity any questionable transactions. Report questionable charges to your card company immediately. Notify your card company of any changes to your address in case you’re traveling.
Precautions sure give us a first line of defense against credit fraud, but it does not provide full guarantee. The key is to understand that we are all responsible for keeping our information secure. We should always be attentive and cautious of our own actions especially in terms of credit management.
