3-Way Ball Valve and Flow Control

In flow control, the use of the ball valve is almost indispensable. The ball valve is of a very simple but unique design that has been one of the most enduring and efficient ways of controlling the movement of liquid within pipelines in many manufacturing processes. They are used in almost every manufacturing process and that includes petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food processing industry, and they can even be found in buildings and residential apartments where the flow of water within pipelines needs to be effectively control.

Principle Operation
The principal of operation of the ball valve is actually very straightforward. The system is made up of spherical disk that can be adjusted or turned to the angle that is required to maintain the required degree of flow control. There is an opening in the spherical disk where fluid can flow through. When this disk is in a closed position, the liquid will also be stopped and this can be done by turning the handle or level at the top of the valve. When the same lever or handle is turned such that the disk is rotated so that the opening becomes perpendicular to the direction of the flow, the liquid in the pipeline is then stopped. The opening and shutting of the spherical disk can also be done remotely by means of a pneumatic actuator. The pneumatic actuator is positioned at the top of the ball valve where the lever is, and by using an electrical signal, the disk can be made to turn by means of the actuator. Such valves are known as control valves.
The material that is used in the construction of the ball valves varies depending on the nature of its use. In highly corrosive environments for example, the casting material of the valve will have to meet the demanding requirements of the harsh conditions under which it operates. Ball valves can also be used under conditions of high temperature and low temperature. In low temperature applications, the cryogenic ball valve is used. Ball valves come with an array of different terminology. Examples of all such devices include actuated ball valve, trunnion ball valve, control valve, 3-way ball valve, cryogenic ball valve and butterfly valve.
Essentially, in any application where the flow of liquid is to be control, the presence of such devices is almost indispensable. The use and selection of the ball valve world depend on the environment at which it operates. Careful consideration in terms of specification requirement has to be strictly adhered to and such decisions are based on carefully calculated engineering process.
